Mary-The Mother of Jesus

Her Name May Mean "Bitterness"
Key Scripture:Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-80; John 19:25-27

One of the topics that our lesson focuses on this week is Angels. Toya gave me this little bear years ago with a heart that bears the inscription, "Mothers are really Angels in disguise." I am so glad that at some point in her life she saw the same quality in me that I saw in my own mother. I too thought that she was an Angel because she seemed to make the impossible happen at just the right time.

Luke 1:37 says, For nothing with God is impossible. He especially hand picked our mothers, as he did the mother of Jesus. He sent angels to guide and console, just like a mother.

In Friday's reading, our text ask that you choose one episode in the life of Mary and imagine yourself in her place. Our text also suggest that we pray for the grace to be like the woman who said; "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said." Meditate on these words and then answer one or all of the questions below:

1. After reading Luke 1:36-37, what two things does the angel tell Mary in these verses? Why would he tell her about Elizabeth? Why would he tell her that "nothing is impossible with God"?

2. If truly "nothing is impossible with God," what area of your life or circumstance do you need to turn over to him? What is keeping you from doing this?

1. The angel tells Mary that Elizabeth her cousin is married and that there is nothing impossible for God.
The Angel told her about Elizabeth to prepare her for what would happen to her and to reinterate the Power of God and what He can do in what man consider to be impossible situations. The Angel told her that nothing is impossible for God to let her know that this is real. Sometimes we need to be reminded that God is real.
2. I can't pinpoint one specific area in my life that I haven't given over to God, because there are many. At different times in my life I rely totally on God and then there times I hold on to things. I don't want to release them because I am afraid that God's answer may not be the same as mine. I want so bad to control these situations to get the outcome that I want. However, I have found that even when press hard against God, He still prevails. When I look back on the situation, I am glad that God look passed my desires at that moment and did what was in my best interest. Its like a parent who knows the road that their child is taking is leading to nowhere. They will fight and press until they can turn that child around even if it hurts. God knows a little hurt and pain now is worth avoid a lifetime of mistakes.

I believe the angel told Mary that nothing is impossible because the things that were occurring were unusual circumstances. For instance, her being pregnant without having any relations with a man and her cousin Elizabeth being pregnant at her old age. Like Roz stated, God told her about Elizabeth to reiterate His power and to assure her that this is really happening. Although Mary didn't doubt, I believe that this was confirmation of what He is capable of. God has to sometimes reveal His power to us in miraculous ways. There was also a connection between the unborn Jesus and John the Baptist.

In my personal life, I believe I sometimes struggle with giving over my finances to God. Eventhough I try not to worry when things get tight, I still have some restless nights. I may not feel like I'm worrying but my actions show differently. If I truly gave this concern over to God, shouldn't I be resting like a baby? I think in many areas I have grown when it comes to giving things over to God and trusting that He will take care of it. Although, I do toss and turn at night from time to time, I know that God has it all in control. I guess that's why I can keep a smile on my face and have JOY in my heart.

I believe the Angel told Mary about Elizabeth’s pregnancy to prepare her for the assignment God had for her. Elizabeth’s news was an illustration that God is a God of possibilities. I believe Mary had confidence in God; therefore, she did not question the validity of the news, instead she was joyful.
Truly, if "nothing is impossible with God," why do we take on life’s challenges? Why is it hard for man to have 110% confidence in the word of God? It’s because we say that all things are possible with God, but we really don’t believe all things are possible to him that believe. If man can believe, things can be achieved! Currently, I am reading a book by Joyce Myers entitled, The Confident Woman. One of the chapters deals with seven secrets of a confident woman. Secret #6 describes a confident woman as one who believes that God is a God of possibilities; therefore, she takes action and does not allow fear to hinder her from trying different things in life. I have been reading this book for the past couple of days and Joyce has talked about me like an old rug that needs to be dusted, shacked and place outside on an old fashion clothes line for some fresh air to understand and to KNOW how much God loves me!
I have the confidence of knowing who I belong to! I can achieve things I was once afraid of trying things and stepping out on faith due to fear of failure. Now I am being to have complete confidence in God’s love for me, I know he wants the best and expects the best of me. Ladies, we must be like Mary, Elizabeth, Rachel, Esther, and the other WOB (Women of the Bible). We must trust our FATHER. He knows best!

My biggest problem and concern with myself is trying to solve and fix everything as if God needs my help. I need to have more faith in knowing that nothing is impossible without God and if I give everything over to him, things will work out in my favor, BUT on HIS time only. Maybe I should pay more attention to the lyrics of "Trouble in My way" (Jesus will fix it)

Mary the mother of Jesus,

Mary was highly favored and blessed among women! Nothing is impossible with God. Mary questioned, why her? She magnified and rejoices in the Lord. God’s mercy is on those who fear Him. Mary made this statement, “God puts down the mighty and exalts the lowly”! The master looks at women who loves Him as highly favor. Sisters, we are precious in God’s sight. Let us keep that zeal so that we always be highly favored by our Master! We need let go and let God, whenever we face with trials.

Love,
