The Woman of Endor

This was a perplexing story. Even our text describes the woman of Endor as a strange character who practiced witchcraft. Nevertheless, God had a purpose for allowing her to call up the prophet Samuel for Saul. She was used as a medium. Once again our text states that she abused herself and distorted her dignity to obtain power by participating in this act.

How many times have you read your horoscope? If we turn that word around and look at the scope of horror, it doesn’t sound like something we really want to dig into. As we learned from the woman of Endor, we really need to trust God for only He can predict our future and know the outcome of our lives. Think about this as you ponder the questions below. Feel free to answer one or all of the questions. Your comments are appreciated.

1. The woman of Endor enters this story fearfully. Why was she afraid? Why did she think meeting with Saul might bring about her death?

2. What “spirits” have you consulted in order to know or plan your future, or just for “fun”? Horoscopes? Cards? Fortune-tellers? Ouija boards? How do you react when told nothing like this should ever be done just for “fun”?

3. What does the woman of Endor’s reaction to Saul in these verses (1 Samuel 28) tell you about her underlying character?
